“The state government is currently and will (continue to) engage with residents through KDEB Waste to provide accurate information regarding the waste-to-energy (WTE) plant development plan,” Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari said in a statement.

“This technology is not from the 70s or 80s.

“The WTE technology is used in developed countries and does not have a negative impact on the environment,” he added.

According to Amirudin, the WTE plant is aimed at reducing dependence on landfill disposal sites which will ultimately have a “detrimental impact on the community”.

His statement comes after FMT reported yesterday that around 300 Rawang residents staged another protest against the proposed construction of the RM4.5 billion Sultan Idris Shah green energy plant.

The group, Rawang Tolak Incinerator Network (RTI), had previously staged a protest against the proposed project last October.

RTI represents residents of Batu Arang, M Residence, Kota Puteri and Bandar Tasik Puteri. They object to the construction of the WTE plant, citing concerns about its effects on the environment.

Its spokesman, Abdul Hanan Mokti, said the group will continue to hold protests to remind the state government that the residents are opposed to the project, and to create public awareness of its impact.
