MBSJ asks businesses to appoint own contractors to dispose of rubbish

KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM), which is the agency tasked with domestic waste collection and public cleaning in Selangor, only handles door-to-door collection of domestic waste, says MBSJ councillor George Yap Kok Weng.

He said business operators in commercial areas have to appoint their own rubbish contractor.

“This is part of the terms in their licence renewal.

Yap: MBSJ can issue a warning or summons only if there is sufficient CCTV footage as evidence

“MBSJ’s website lists the panel of approved rubbish collectors, which will dispose of rubbish at designated dumpsites,” said Yap, who is in charge of the Bandar Puteri Puchong zone.

He said people who illegally dumped rubbish in commercial areas were likely those who did not have their own contractor and just took the easy way out.

“MBSJ can issue a warning or summons only if there is sufficient CCTV footage or evidence of the perpetrator,” he said.

Yap said KDEBWM’s tasks were also hampered by challenges such as the need to hire more workers and meeting the minimum wage requirements for workers.

Depending on the urgency of the matter and whether an external agency is involved, such as a utility company, Yap said it would take about three working days for a complaint to be looked into.

When contacted, MBSJ Corporate and Strategic Management Department deputy director Azfarizal Abdul Rashid said MBSJ always monitored the public cleaning schedule and scope of work set for KDEBWM and would issue a notice if there was any non-compliance.

“In terms of environmental cleanliness, MBSJ through KDEBWM is active in carrying out scheduled cleaning works, which is twice a month for drain cleaning,” he said.

“However, cooperation by residents and restaurant owners is essential so that wastewater from washing is not channelled into drains, which contributes to dirty and clogged drains.”

He said MBSJ also carried out regular inspections to ensure premises owners complied with council rules and guidelines.

“During an integrated operation on 19 premises at Jalan SS15/8 and Jalan SS15/8A in early March, MBSJ issued nine administrative notices and one compound for various offences violated by some owners,” said Azfarizal.

For fast action and more systematic coordination, he said complaints regarding drain cleaning throughout Selangor could be submitted directly to KDEBWM via WhatsApp at 019-274 2824.

The public could also channel complaints through the MBSJ website hotline at 03-8024 7700 or the area’s councillor or residents’ representative council (MPP).
