KDEB Confirms EIA For Sultan Idris Shah Green Energy Plant Still Active

The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the proposed Sultan Idris Shah (SIS) Green Energy Plant in Selangor remains active and under review by the Department of Environment (DOE), KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM) confirmed on March 14.

Contrary to public speculation, the EIA submission has not been rejected. Official feedback from the DOE and the Environmental Impact Assessment Technical Review Committee (EIATRC) did not indicate any fundamental concerns regarding the plant’s proposed design or location suitability.

The ongoing process involves administrative revisions, particularly improvements in the documentation and tabulation of feedback from an extensive public consultation exercise conducted over the past two years, which collected more than 12,000 submissions from various stakeholders.

The SIS Green Energy Plant is part of Selangor’s strategy to modernise waste management and reduce reliance on constrained landfill capacity. By using Waste-to-Energy technology, the state aims to generate renewable energy while safely managing municipal waste.

KDEBWM emphasised that development will only proceed upon full compliance with Malaysia’s environmental regulations and final DOE approval, with stringent emission controls and continuous monitoring in place once operational.

Dato’ Ramli Mohd Tahir, Managing Director of KDEBWM, said the company remains committed to cooperating with authorities, experts and the public to deliver a sustainable, long-term waste management solution for Selangor.
